Our bodies naturally absorb and emit infrared energy. We can absorb infrared warmth energy from the sun. When the sun goes behind a cloud the air temperature does not suddenly drop it is just that we can no longer feel the infrared rays from the sun. Our bodies use this infrared energy to increase blood flow around the body, taking with it warmth, oxygen and aiding bodily processes, this can also help the healing process of tissues. Healing hands, infrared heat lamps and infrared saunas have been used for many years to alleviate soreness and muscle damage.

Nowadays thermal imaging cameras can digitally pin point where large amounts of infrared energy are building up and damage has occurred, showing the extent of infrared heat build up assists medical practitioners in their diagnosis and treatment. Infrared energy is being emitted from the body all the time, which is why a warming hug on a cold day feels so nice, we give of infrared warmth naturally. Rescue services use thermal imaging cameras to find people by picking up the infrared energy they are giving off.

Infrared warmth is a natural part of our lives and bodily process and therefore when infrared energy is provided to us in the optimum wavelength our bodies can feel comfortable. Infrared heating panels mimic the wavelength which is most comfortable to the human body.

Domestic infrared heating panels provide very gentle warmth and we do not claim to any health benefits other than the fact that direct warmth feels nice and is far more comfortable than some hot air heating which can dry and scorch the air causing drowsiness and aggravating bronchial conditions. Most customers comment that they like the “feel” of infrared warmth.

Our Salus wireless thermostats provide an unobtrusive solution to fitting controls for your new infrared heating panel. The thermostat unit does not physically need to be connected to the heating panel therefore minimising cabling and unsightly wall controls. The heating panel is wired to the adjacent receiver unit, and the cabling taken up through the ceiling to the nearest electrical spur. The two units are linked together by Radio Frequency (RF) signal. The thermostat unit is constantly sending signals to the receiver unit to maintain temperature within the room, all programming is done from the thermostat unit.

The Salus RT300RF is simply a thermostatic control, allowing you to set a comfortable temperature in the room, the panel will turn on and off to maintain that temperature whilst it is switched on.

The Salus RT500RF is programmable too.  Programme your heating for different set points throughout the day and each day individually. Flexible controls allows you to be more efficient with energy.

The programmers we recommend on our website are designed to work with other forms of heating too, and therefore we expect electricians to substitute the word boiler in the instructions for infrared panel.

The instructions enclosed in the programmer box are clear and easy to follow. Please read them carefully and logically. Please note that the switch contacts at NO and C on the receiver terminal board are ‘volt free’ and will not therefore supply power directly to the infrared panel. Boilers sometimes have their own separate electrical connection.

For wireless programmers. To ensure power is supplied to the infrared panels as required proceed as follows: Connect a permanent 240 volt mains supply to terminals L and N in the receiver. Connect the infrared panel neutral (blue) wire to the neutral (N) terminal in the receiver. Connect the infrared panel live (brown) wire to the normally open (NO) terminal in the receiver. Connect a permanent link wire between live (L) and common (C) terminals in the receiver. This will ensure that when the receiver switches the power on it will reach the panel.

 

Having read up about infrared heating you are probably aware that infrared is part of the light spectrum and was first discovered in 1800 by William Herschel. He was an incredibly clever and talented man, not only an astronomer, technical expert but also a musician and composer.

In 1781, Herschel noticed a small object in the skies that, after further observation revealed that the object was a planet. Herschel lobbied to name the new body ‘Georgium Sidus’, after King George III, but it was eventually named Uranus after the Greek god of the sky. As a result of his discovery, the monarch knighted Herschel and appointed him to the position of court astronomer.

Over 20 years, he observed 2,500 new nebulae and star clusters and recorded them in “The General Catalogue of Nebulae.” An updated version is still in use today.

In 1800, Herschel performed a simple experiment determining the temperature of the different colors of sunlight passed through a prism. He noticed the region just beyond the red color was even higher than light in the visible spectrum, and used his measurements to deduce the presence of what is now known to be infrared radiation.

The European Space Agency’s infrared space observatory was subsequently named after him.

The Herschel Space Observatory is ESA’s far-infrared space telescope. Herschel was launched in May 2009 and is now taking scientific data.  Working on a number of programmes related to dust in galaxies and galaxy evolution. These include the HerMES cosmological survey – the largest single programme on the observatory – the Herschel-ATLAS survey – a large area survey aimed at determining the far-IR properties of normal galaxies – and detailed studies of nearby galaxies.

There are three instruments on the Herschel telescope. Spire is a camera that looks at far-infrared light, Pacs a camera that will take pictures in far-infared light, and Hifi an instrument like a radio receiver that will tune in to very particular wavelengths of far-infared light.

It is these types of infrared cameras that bring us images of the skies especially showing areas of heat. The computerised images visualise infrared heat which is invisible to the human eye.

Infrared fact!

Did you know the suns natural infrared rays penetrate deeply into our body, so we really do soak up the sun! Why? Well, our body is designed to absorb infrared warmth at a particular wavelength, of between 4 and 10 microns, the infrared energy soaks in deeply to help bodily processes, keeping ourselves warm is a small part of all the other workings good blood circulation is involved with. Infrared heating panels cleverly replicate this by also providing infrared energy at this optimum level for bodily comfort.

Well, that’s what some bloke told me down the pub last night. He believes that within five years all the solar power, wind power etc… will add so many additional costs to the system that a unit of electricity will cost in excess of 25p.

I will admit that my thought process is quite different but it got me to thinking and so I checked out on Google whether there was any truth in this forecast. I couldn’t find one, but I did find a report from the Library at the House of Commons (Standard Note: SN/SG/4153) dated 8th March 2013 and it’s opening sentence states “The price of domestic gas and electricity has generally increased over the past eight years after around a decade of falling prices. The cost of heating oil has increased by a larger amount.”

In one of the tables at the back (in section 3) it gives the “Fuel price components of the RPI” and in January 1987 the indices of each commodity started at 100 – 10 years ago in January 2003 electricity was standing at 74.1, gas at 72.2 and oil at 79.6.

Gas has been recognised as being the cheapest and most popular form of heating solution for most homes and proving in inflation terms that it remains so!

By January of this year though electricity was standing at 114.8, an increase of 55% over 10 years. Gas had increased to 152.1, an even bigger increase of 114.5% and oil up to 203.3 an even bigger increase of 155%.

So, in 10 years the price of electricity is increasing much slower than oil & gas!

Going forward, the same report states “Real increases in typical gas bills to 2020 are forecast to be 12%, while real electricity bills are forecast to be 8% lower than in 2011. In 2020 the full range of policies is projected to add 1% to a typical gas bill (compared to a situation with no policy) and cut electricity bills by 16%” This last statement was from a report entitled “Estimated impacts of energy and climate change policies on energy prices and bills” – DECC in November 2011.

So, in my opinion the price of electricity won’t double and many people will want to have electricity as the power source of choice in providing their heating & energy solutions!

Feel those infrared rays from the sunshine!

Today the sun is shining and all the holidaymakers here in Devon for half term must think we live in paradise! Clear blue skies and warm sunshine.

The suns infrared rays warm us, as well as buildings and roads and soil, all of which then radiate warmth to warm the air. In cities you will notice this more than here in the countryside as buildings really do soak up the infrared rays and radiate warmth back often making the air stifling right into the evening. Here, there is always a cooling breeze, but don’t be deceived those infrared rays are still warming everything they touch.

For the first time this year I sat out in the garden for breakfast, it was early and cool, there is only one small patch of sunshine at this time of day, but I manoeuvred my chair to sit and soak up the pleasant infrared rays. The side of my body in the sun was becoming quite warm whilst the other half was feeling decidedly chilly!

So when positioning your infrared heating panel in your home please bear in mind you want to feel those infrared rays shining down on you, fit the panel up on the ceiling or high on the wall and avoid creating shadows or areas where the rays simply cannot be felt.

Infrared heaters at the Devon County Show

We had a wonderful time at the Devon County Show, even before the show was open other exhibitors were talking to us about infrared heating, the patio heaters and Special Offer panels quickly sold out over the weekend period with the last three panels selling from the website on Monday morning!

Needless to say there were a few disappointed shoppers after Phil from the Butchers Arms at Abbotskerswell, South Devon came and bought all our remaining patio heaters! The traditional country pub has a large outdoor eating area which needed a bit of extra heating in our chilly summer weather. I wish Phil and his wife Vicky every success with their venture!

The concept of infrared heating for the home inspired many visitors to look at their own energy consumption and contemplate infrared as an option for use themselves, we had interest from customers considering infrared due to its low energy usage either for use in conjunction with solar PV electricity to achieve best economical use of the free daytime electricity generated, or for use in a remote location only powered by a small domestic wind turbine which stores power in a battery, to the more usual energy efficient new builds and simple refurbishment projects.

Attending a large show like this is a good opportunity to meet new customers face to face, and those who have seen us before at events, and those who read our newsletters! Our thanks go out to everyone who stopped by and made our show really successful.

Infrared heat – a growing talking point with so many applications.

When the world of science and technology pick up on an idea, the implications of that idea often go much farther than the original concept. Infrared heating is one such case, developed for heating materials in manufacture, initially a faster drying process, the idea has now been developed to apply to so many other processes. One such process is thermoforming – the moulding of plastics, so much of what we use today involves moulded plastic, but also includes paint drying times, the curing of PVC pastes, moulding of polystyrene and the setting of T shirt transfers. In difficult times where every penny counts, factories are looking at saving energy and costs, and the investment in infrared heat can provide targeted and precise heating turning on and off in an instant to avoid wasting electricity. Industry is welcoming the new energy saving technology, particularly when being encouraged to be green, and the use of infrared heat becomes more widespread. This is a worldwide trend.

With the more common use of infrared heat in industry there quickly becomes better knowledge of the subject and of course more development into other applications. The Chinese now want to be seen at the forefront of quality technology, they are no longer simply making cheap copies, and are involved in research and development into different types of infrared heaters for different situations using both long and short wave, emitted from different materials and very much depending on the application as to which is the most energy efficient and effective.

Certainly our customers are far more knowledgeable about how infrared heat works on the body and the structure of our homes, and it is a subject that is gaining discussion with those involved in creating highly energy efficient homes and renewable energy projects to larger commercial businesses wishing to lower their heating bills.
